Temporal Variations in Suicide Occurrence in Australia: A Research Note

Riaz Hassan

Faculty of Social Sciences Flinders University

This paper reports the findings of a study of temporal variations in suicide occurrence in Australia. The study is based on the analysis of 19,425 suicides registered between 1981 and 1990. The findings show that the incidence of suicide appears to follow a distinct weekly cycle. This cycle is more pronounced for men than women. Suicide occurrence also varies by seasons. Some sociological explanations of these differences are offered.
